PhD opportunity: River pollutant source apportionment using water fingerprinting One Health frameworks

Using a combination of chemical fingerprints, statistical modelling and geospatial data, this studentship will identify and quantify specific origins (e.g. industrial, agricultural, domestic or natural sources) of pollutants found in rivers. This studentship will deliver a One Health framework that captures the heterogeneity of multi-chemical exposure in urban river environments which is critical for the development of informed, evidence-based regulatory frameworks for public and environmental health protection.

PhD opportunity: One Health evaluation of impacts from hazardous chemicals on rivers’ health

This project will focus on the application of water fingerprinting approaches using cutting-edge mass spectrometry techniques in the analysis of wide-ranging hazardous chemical groups: chemicals leaching from plastics, PFAS, antibiotics, pesticides and road runoff chemicals in Cam and Wellow Rivers to understand key contributing sources to river pollution, verify risk, and to establish mitigations strategies.

PhD opportunity – Rapid, near-the-source detection of key pathogens in bathing waters

This project is in alignment with Wessex Water’s (WW) urgent need and interest in monitoring microbiological water quality for protection of swimmers, especially during Spring/Summertime. Extensive investigations done at Warleigh Weir, Bath helped better understand the bathing water quality based on the current E.coli and intestinal enterococci standards, and the opportunity to provide real time information to swimmers.

New paper published – Flow-driven biomarker movement in gravitational sewers for wastewater-based epidemiology and public health monitoring

CWBE's researchers, alongside other colleagues at Bath, Bangor University, Arup and Verily, have published a new paper on the movement of biological (genetic viral, fungal or bacterial) and chemical indicators (BCIs) within sewer networks. This is critical to wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) enabling accurate calculation of chemical and pathogen loads within a community.

Prescribing fewer antibiotics might not be enough to combat threat of “superbugs”, says new research

Scientists at Bath have found that despite fewer antibiotics being used during lockdown, antimicrobial resistance still persisted in the environment.

New paper published – building bridges to operationalize One Health

CWBE's researchers, alongside collaborators at the Environment Agency, Wessex Water and University of Bristol, have published a new paper on community-wide antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the shadow of COVID-19, using wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE).
