Dr Nicola Ceolotto

Department of Chemistry

Dr Nicola Ceolotto is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Bath. He’s currently working on the Innovative Pathway Control project to monitor consumption rates of pharmaceuticals as proxy for disease prevalence and their environmental risks when discharged into the environment.

He’s specialised in wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) to monitor population health status and lifestyle factors, within the context of early warning systems. By integrating WBE evidences with socioeconomic, weather, sales data, and other relevant sources, his work aims to better understand the drivers of exposure and health trends across communities to identify potential issues at early stages before they escalate.

His research leverages a wide range of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) techniques, from triple quadrupole to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and advanced ion mobility (IM). These methods are used to quantify target biomarkers and characterise the composition of various environmental matrices. This multifaceted approach provides valuable insights into population health dynamics and exposure patterns, offering a more comprehensive understanding of the interconnections between environment and public health.

Dr. Nicola Ceolotto brings programming expertise in R, contributing to data visualisation, quality assurance, statistical modelling and analysis for large-scale datasets. As an active contributor to the SCORE group, he collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to provide illicit drugs consumption rates to the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA) to drive impactful research that informs policy makers and institutions.
