Afzal Hussain

Department of Chemistry

Afzal completed his bachelor’s in chemistry from National University, Bangladesh. Later he pursued his masters in Analytical and Forensic Chemistry from University of Hull, UK in 2023. In his master’s thesis, he developed a spectroscopic method to determination of polymorphic changes between the branded and generic pharmaceuticals which allowed him to gain better understanding of computational chemistry alongside analytical. After his graduation he worked at Reckitt Benckiser, Hull on Gaviscon Bench till end of 2024 which enables him to gain hands-on experience on wide range of analytical and spectroscopic techniques. Later in 2024 he joined University of Plymouth as R&D Analytical Chemist (KTP Associate) on InnovateUK funded project to develop a novel strategy to quantify CBD (cannabinoids) in cosmetics and food supplements.

As a first year PhD at University of Bath, he is using wastewater-based epidemiology and advanced mass spectroscopic technique to determine pharmaceuticals leaching in the environment and their impacts on one health.
